When Good Sushi Goes Bad

by Tom on July 17th, 2007

Sushi is a particular type of food that my wife says belongs to the “Clean Food” category.  She bases this on the way it makes you feel after you eat it and it is joined by various salads, rice paper rolls and a few other recipes.  I think you know how it feels: sort of full but happy, sort of stuffed but still ready for action.  In contrast to a feast of any other sort, Sushi has the potential to really make you glad that you started.  There is normally no sluggish, sleepy, sorry feeling from eating even a massive sushi meal.  All in all you end up feeling sort of “Clean”.

That is, unless you ate out with us today at the Otaru Zushi train, and you succumbed to the temptation for lemon cake for just 105 yen.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, but afterwards it became clear why it was so cheap.  A stack of empty sushi plates usually leaves me satisfied and re-energized.  Today after the lemon cake I felt ill and defeated.  What a poor way to end a good meal.  I should have known better, but I fell for a good looking cake.  Never again, I hope.

Sorry but I forgot my camera so I have no photos to prove my pain, but trust me it isn’t worth repeating.

It is now some 7 hours later and I am feeling good again, so I’m putting the finishing touches on a lamb dish that I corrupted and re-named while I was back in Australia called “Lamb Bamb Thank You Mam”.  If anyone wants it I can email the recipe as this one is dangerous.
