Today I had the best soba experience I have ever had. Believe me I have had some wonderful soba times but this was the best.
Kake soba, fresh off the noodle bed, served searingly hot in rich and salty soup. It was big, very big and just what I needed to survive the cold. I rode […]

Now here is another dish that I am not sure about its name. I think it is called Ozoni, but I would like confirmation of this. It is a simple dish which, in this case, included chicken, grilled omochi, carrot, green veges, and chikuwa fish sausage served in a soup stock. It tastes great, but […]

Today, once again I was rescued by my friend the vending machine. It was cold and bleak and I was on my bike still 10 klms from home. What I needed was sweet, hot, quick cheap, and satisfying.
Gladly there was a Yamazaki vending machine nearby and I cleverly selected the perfect solution. Canned corn soup.

As Autumn turns into winter in Japan, the drink vending machines gradually change from cold to hot. Hot tea, hot coffee, hot lemon drinks and hot red bean soup.

We went for shabu shabu this time. This means a pot […]

Last night we had some friends over, including Ian from Australia. He requested Ramen and so we got to it. It ended up great but a little unconventional as we had way to many things and not nearly enough soup in the bowl. Also in the rush (we were starving) nobody thought to take a photo […]

You cannot be Filipino and not love sinigang. For that reason alone, rasam would be tops on a Filipino’s list of favorite Indian foods. Rasam is what I make in the cold season, when I don’t have fish or meat in the freezer and yet I’m longing for something hot and sour, to […]

There are probably as many recipes for miso soup as there are cooks in Japan, but yesterday I found a new favourite. I was having lunch at Yamamoto Sushi in Tsukuba and as a part of a lunch time promotion they brought around big bowls of Kame (crab) and Miso soup. It tasted like the […]
