Spam sandwich

Maybe I’ve lead a sheltered existence but is this normal.  Where I come from spam is what you eat when the cupboard is empty not what you advertise on big billboards in restaurants.  Maybe I’m missing something here and I’m being culturally insensitive but I don’t think this is a Japanese phenomenon?  Where does it come from?

It’s a Hawaiian thing… they love Spam in Hawaii. McDonald’s and Burger King both have Spam sandwiches in Hawaii, and I’ve heard of (but never seen) Spam pizza. In fact, Hawaii’s second most famous food (after poi) is Spam Musubi! (basically Spam sushi, but made with normal rice)

…Actually, on closer inspection, doesn’t it say “Aloha!” on the sign in your picture?
