Red Bean balls
We were given an Omiege (souvenir) by some friends who visited Hiroshima last week. They told us simply that they were sweet and fun, so they were a bit of a mystery.
After opening the beautiful shiny boxes, all that was there was these hard rubber balls as you can see in the picture. It turns out that they were actually balloons with a little elastic string tying up the end. As soon as the string was untied, liquid squeezed out and so we assumed that they were filled with liquid, but after trying to drink the contents, found that most of the contents were actually solid. With a little squeezing and squirming, this solid ball popped out of the ridiculously tight rubber skin onto the plate. It turns out, the ball was solid and very smooth red bean paste . Dark red, almost black and delicious. How they got it into the balloons I can not understand but it was a really nice way to present such a refined sweet.

Tom,
Not sure if you talked about Yukon before. I suspect this is a form of yukon, not the traiditional way of a stick. The liquid material can be injected into the balloon before it is jellied. I remember I had this before when I was a kid…that’s my guess. I found some recipes using Knox gelatine powder instead of agar-agar. I am going to try to make it today.

Wow, at first I thought that you had put the wrong picture in this post… the balloon looks like some sort of plum with the stem still attached!
