Ramadan Recipes
The holy Islamic month of Ramadan/Ramadhan/Ramzaan began September 23. This month-long fast requires believers to abstain from eating, drinking and other sensory pleasures from sun-up to sundown. Water is not allowed, and my Pakistani friend Azra says neither is swallowing your own saliva! They rise in the morning before dawn to eat an early meal before they go about their day, and they don’t touch food or drink until after sundown, when the feasting commences. I plan to feature a few Ramadan dishes before the festival of Eid-al-Fatr (October 23 this year). In the meantime, here are a few suggestions to whet your appetite:
- Samosas, from Jasmine in Her Hair, a book by Huma Siddiqui of White Jasmine
- Zabihah.com, your guide to Halal restaurants and groceries in your area
- from Chef Zadi
- Recipes from WebIndia
- Pictures of Ramadan bazaars in Malaysia
I am especially curious to find lesser known recipes of Islamic-Asian peoples. If you have a favorite Ramadan recipe you’d like to share or that you’d like to see featured here, let me know.
