Pork Bun?
What would you call this? As you can see from the terrible photo, it is quite small - easily fitting in my hand. With a brown baked pastry crust and a filling of pork and onions. If it was steamed I would be more sure but baked? It came from my local “French” bakery and it was great but I am not sure that it is French or Japanese. Any suggestions?

The picture’s a bit out of focus, but from your description, it sounds kind of like a mini empanada, which is neither French nor Japanese. It is attributed to Spanish, Mexican, Filipino, and other cultures, each with its own slightly different take on the empanada, of course. Generally, however, there is some kind of meat inside (be it pork, chicken, beef, etc.) and often some veggies like onions, carrots, potatoes. Filipino ones sometimes have raisins in them, too, but basically empanadas are meat pies. I went to an African restaurant once and found a meat pie there that seemed very similar.

Most Chinese/HongKong-style bakeries carry baked meat buns in various shapes and sizes. Most common is BBQ pork(aka char-siew) . They do come steamed(as in dim-sum) but I think baked is more flavourful.
