Pizza Man
On Sunday I found myself cold and miserably hungry. I rolled down the street in search of something, anything that was hot and filling and before I knew it, there stood the 7-11 konbeni. Inside was everything a stomach could desire but it had to be hot so I had a choice between Oden, hot chicken, wieners, or an assortment of niku man buns. These last looked the most satisfying so I grabbed a pizza man, gave the lady 105 yen and ran outside to solve all of my problems.
Pizza man are a strange breed of light fluffy steamed bun with a meaty/cheesy/tomatoy filling inside. Of course it tastes nothing like real pizza, but somehow - maybe it is the smell - you are reminded of the sensation of eating pizza as soon as you take your first bite. Perhaps it is the searing heat that scolds your tongue. Perhaps it is the big globs that drip and ooze all over you. Perhaps it is just the name. Whatever the reason, there is something to be said for a Japanese snack that is based on a Chinese snack that is filled with an American snack which claims to be an Italian snack. $ languages in one mouthful, but still I go back for seconds
Pizza Man…look for him when you are in trouble.
