Sapporo beer when it grows up

p9180552.JPG

Sapporo beer is usually a white or silver creature when it is young.  It is common to find these younger ones measuring about 350ml.   However when they grow up to be either 633 or 750ml they change color to a black.  The labels and logos still stay the same and as far a s I can tell they still taste the same.  Why the colour change?

Our last dinner in Aomori

p9080515.JPG

This was our last dinner in Aomori and the inn really did themselves proud.

Baked tai (red bream) fish with ginger

Creamy tofu

sashimi

Fried chicken

grilled pork

pickles

miso

and rice

It doesn’t look like much when you start on an individual dish but by the end I was absolutely full.  It was genuinely hard work heading out that night to visit the last night of the Aomori festival with their Hanabi display.

What is this machine?

p9080514.JPG

Have a close look and try and work out what is going on here before you read on.

In the basket at the bottom is a pile of freshly shredded dried squid.  At the top is a big mechanical monster that picks up the dried and quite flat squid and strips it down into deliciously thin slivers.  I am not usually impressed by his sort of display, but the shreds that came out were the best that I have ever tasted.  Perhaps this is another example of where food loses flavour fast once it is processed even if it has already gone through a battering to get it to that stage.  Shredded dried squid may not be for everyone, but I really think that you will change your opinion once you have tried it.

Steamed crab custard

Sashimi tuna, scallop and crab meat

Fried pork and shitake mushrooms

Urchin roe salad

Pickles

Miso with coloured tofu?

Konbu rolls

I thought I’d died and gone to heaven

Spiral potato

p9080517.JPG

This was bought at the same place that I got the squid stick thing yesterday.  It is a potato spiral cut, lightly bread crumbed and deep fried on a stick.  Does anyone know how this is done?  I mean is it possible to cut it like this by hand?  It looks like a lot of work, but soooo delicious.

What is going on here?

p9080516.JPG

I bought this thing at a supermarket in Aomori.  All I know about it is that it involves squid (or cuttlefish) and is dressed up like an American hot dog on a stick with tomato ketchup and mustard.  It was deep fried and hot but not very much else.  It basically tasted like ketchup and mustard which may have been a blessing.  What is going on with all of this food crossbreeding?  Is this what globalisation is all about?

Sapporo beer caramel

p9080513.JPG

Is this genius or butchery.  The Sapporo beer factory in Hokkaido has developed a sweet caramel in the flavour of their world famous beer.  Unfortunately I didn’t get to try this as I sent my only sample on to someone who may appreciate it even more then me.  Has anyone else tried Sapporo beer caramel?

Aomori Nebuta festival

p8310511.JPG

While this has very little to do with noodles, rice or any other food I had to include it here because it has been a feature of my travels so far.  Every year the northern Honshu city of Aomori puts on a matsuri that features these massive hand built lantern floats.  Each is about the size of a small truck and is pushed around by a about 20 or so people.  They are sort of opaque and so lights from within bring out the amazing colours and details as the sun goes down.  The matsuri lasts for most of the week and so each night the floats parade up and down the city accompanied by countless dancers, taiko drummers, percussionists and flautists.  If you ever get the chance this is one Japanese experience that I would recommend to anyone.  Plan your trip here to coincide with early August and you could net Aomori, a neighbouring city as well as nearby (Hokkaido) Hakodate all in full matsuri season.  All three in one week would be an amazing trip.

Breakfast in Aomori

p8310510.JPG

Try this on for breakfast.  It was served up by the inn we stayed at in aomori.

Pickles, soup, grilled shellfish, rice, ham, salad, sauteed bits and pieces and sashimi.  Not what I am used to but I think I could grow to like it.  Of course the best bit was the presentation but the food also tasted great.

Ichigo ice cream pancake

p8310509.JPG

It looks surprisingly docile when you open the packet but there is nothing like a sickly sweet blast of strawberry ice cream to make you realise that this is some seriously sweet food.  It is just 2 sweet pancakes (pikelets, hotcakes depending where you are from) sandwiched around strawberry ice cream.  I am not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t this.
