Osechi Ryouri
It seems like a long way away, but yesterday we ordered our new years food. The deal is that you should order this special food in advance and do no cooking over the few days around new year.
Osechi Ryouri (New Years Food) is a particular type of food that traditionally was durable enough to last, but also includes a lot of symbols about new year things. Each plate or tray contains a selection of different samples of dishes and a set of trays can involve a lot of separate dishes. Making each of these dishes only to end up with a sample of each is a nightmare, so people like us order it all in.
I have a bit of a conscience about buying in all of this food, so I am going to try and make up a dish or two in the gap between skiing and new years day. I have no idea what to cook so if any of you has any opinions I would love to hear from you.
Either way, I’ll make sure to write about it straight after new years day. If you have ever seen this food, you will know how exciting it can be.
