Matsuri Potatoes

Some would say that I am scraping the bottom of the barrel of classic Matsuri food, by writing about potatoes.  However, I’ve decided that I owe it to you all to write this, not so much as a recipe, a description or even a cultural message, but more as a warning.

These potatoes are steamed in the beautiful wooden steamers that you see in the photos, which could make you think that these are one of the more healthy of the Matsuri options.  I am sorry to disappoint you, but even if the potatoes are healthy, the topping is not.  I ordered my first, and I think last, potato cooked like this last year at the Tsuchiura Fireworks competition.  It was sort dark and I started eating it as I walked, only to discover that what I thought was a massive potato was actually a medium potato and an equal amount of margarine.

I like fatty foods sometimes.  If I had a choice I would probably say yes to butter on a potato, but this was ridiculous.  I have seen butter on food before but not like this.  Wading through thick, gooey margarine trying to find a potato was not my idea of fun.  I felt like I held in my hands the seeds of a coronary.  It took all of my efforts not to allow heartburn to take over my night.

It was a very poor experience and so I feel it is my duty to warn you all.   If you visit a Matsuri, stay clear of the potato, it promises great things, but only delivers suffering.
