Maaboo Tofu

Japanese supermarkets are loaded with easy cooking meals.  There always seems to be at least half an aisle of boxes and sachets of mysterious looking mixes, which obviously form the base of a dinner.  Most of these packets are a complete mystery to me.  I can’t work out what is in the box, what I have to add to what is in the box or how to put it all together.

One of the exceptions is Maaboo Tofu. There are always a small selection of boxes containing the basis for this Chinese dish.  The choices often vary on a scale of spiciness.  All of the versions that I have tried have been relatively tame, but I refuse to be quoted on that.  Remember as investment advisers always warn us, past history is no guarantee of future performance.  If you want to play it safe stick to 3 out of 5 grade.

The basic recipe is for a tofu based stew.  Everything is included in the box except the tofu  (and perhaps spinach if you like it).  The method is very simple.  Mix a cup of water with the first sachet, in a fry pan.  Add a standard sized cake of tofu, cut up into cubes.  Mix the second sachet with a tiny bit of water and pour it in.  This second sachet just thickens up the sauce.

When it is thickened, dump a great big pile on a bowl of rice and enjoy.  Within maybe five minutes you have “cooked” dinner and it even tastes great.

Note:  No guarantee is made regarding the long term health effects of eating pre-made foods like this.  They look good, taste good and even smell good and so this makes me very suspicious.

I love this dish. I wasn’t a big fan of tofu until I tried this dish…fantastic with a large helping of rice!

You are right about the rice. All the good sauce soaks into the rice and makes it sooo good.

It looks delicious, but can you recall the smell! It is out of this world

    Thanks
