Kirin Nuda - A new Japanese Miracle

by Tom on August 17th, 2007

My quest for summer refreshment has taken me in some interesting directions but none so bizarre as the new flavour of Kirin Nuda.

I first saw it advertised on a poster in a train and decided that I had to give it a try.  Who could resist a drink called Kirin Nuda - Grapefruit and Hop - Sparkling.  So much the more when I read that “Kirin Nuda is for grown ups that can be enjoyed anywhere”.

So I bought it and tried it and regretted it.  It is one of the most spectacularly under-flavoured experiences of my life.  If flavour could be measured on a scale from pure chili at 10 down to water at 1, then this new flavour would come in at about minus 2.  Yes that is right, somehow it has less flavour than ordinary tap water.  I  can’t explain it but I have never had a drink that concentrated so little flavour in 500ml of volume.

Of course I may be being over critical but I genuinely believe that this drink is spectacular in a totally unexpected way.  The manufacturers have truly excelled themselves in creating a totally new Japanese miracle.  The first drink to have less than zero taste.

Having said that it was  cold and wet and that is something.

3 opinions for Kirin Nuda - A new Japanese Miracle

I have to disagree…this is, in my opinion, one of the greatest drinks ever! I find it so rarely though that I have to stock up when I do, buying 4-5 bottles at a time. One night, my wife and I were out to supper, and I got 4 each at 3 different conbinis. My backpack weighed about 15 kilos by the time we headed home…

    Try it with gin…

I must agree with Dave. Finally a refreshing drink that is carbonated but not sweet. I have found the Grapefruit and Hops flavor in only one location, but have found a Lemon and Hops flavor a little more regularly (although still somewhat hard to find). I only wish there was a way to order/buy it by the case.
