Kaki time
Autumn is coming to a close and the Kaki are out in force. No, not the jungle green uniform that the army wears. Kaki are Japanese Persimmons. Kaki is the name used to describe a few quite different species, from the egg shaped crispy ones to the more pumpkin shaped squashy ones.
They all taste fairly similar, but the texture is so different that you might as well be eating different fruit all together.
Kaki is a beautiful vibrant orange when it is ripe and looks a treat on the tree. These trees are everywhere around here, much like an orange tree would be in Australia. In fact there are so many Kaki around, that they are often just left to fall and turn to mush on the road.
Kaki are not everyone’s favourite fruit but thay are a seasonal speciality and so they are appreciated when they are available. Apart from eating them raw, there must be other ways to use them.
If anyone could point me to their favourite Kaki/persimon recipe I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks
Tom
