Japanese Hospital food
I have had very little experience of hospitals. I have had very little experience of hospital food. One thing I do know, is that Hospital food generally gets pretty poor reviews. In fact it is up there with school food and even prison food for an overall bad reputation.
My wife spent last week in a small Japanese Hospital after giving birth to our new baby son, and she was pleasantly surprised by what they served up.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all served as trays full of a multitude of small, delicious, and beautiful dishes. Each meal was different to the last and all were very well balanced in a nutritional sense. The food was well prepared and not over cooked. The colours and arrangements were set to tempt even the least hungry patients.
The hard part about all of this was that when I visited near a meal time, I was treated to the smell and the vision of this food, but I still went home with an empty stomach. I felt seriously disappointed about this but had to remind myself that all of the patients in a maternity hospital have earned their meals. I wouldn’t swap places for anything.

Tom! I’m SOOOO envious. Although I’ve always loved hospital food (even here in the US — anything not prepared by me personally brings a certain excitement; even applesauce in a plastic bowl), it’s obviously nothing compared to Japanese hospital food. Wow! That almost looks like the Japanese room-service meal we had at one of the top hotels in NYC.
Oh, and sneaky you, with the baby bit thrown in there. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU AND YOUR WIFE. I hope you’ll post pics sometime at the b5forum at least…

Congratulations ! I remember my hospital meals at the maternity ward. Can’t say it was fantastic neither can I say it was bad. I have to say the Japanese hospital has a beautiful way of presenting their meals. It sure is appetizing. :)

Congrats on the new baby! And nice phrasing there at the end! I’m a woman, and I don’t think I’d want to switch places with her either! Not yet anyway!

no way this is hospital food! That tray would be found in nicer Japanese restaurants here.
But congratulations to you and your wife for a baby boy that will grow up enjoying the best that Japan will offer.

They are both doing well and things are settling down nicely.
Now for some more Japanese food!
