“Dee Chan Kin Tae Pak”

by Stef on April 26th, 2006

“I eat only vegetables.” This is the phrase photographer and traveler Carl Weaver suggests you use if you’re a vegetarian traveling to Thailand. (Substitute “Pom” for “Dee Chan” if you’re a man.)

The more I learn about vegan and vegetarian diets, the more I appreciate Asian cuisine, particularly Thai. These people know how to eat vegetarian without compromising the least bit of flavor!

In this article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jainist Sheila Lalwani tells us about her trip to Thailand and how her hosts constantly went out of their way to accommodate her dietary needs. She reiterates many of the things Carl Weaver mentions in his 2004 article on Thai travel for backpacker.net. Sheila also has several suggestions for Thai restaurants to try while you’re in Milwaukee.

Here’s a link to recipes for those of you wanting to enjoy vegetarian food with a Thai touch. And if you’d like to learn more about Jainism and its influence on Indian cuisine, click here.
