Today is the last day of Golden Week here in Japan. It is made up of a string of public holidays (this week broken up by some work days for some malicious reason). Yesterday was Boys day so I thought I would share one last bit of boy’s day for this year. This morning we opened some […]

On Boy’s Day in Japan, there are plenty of different sweets to try. As far as I can work out this is not specifically for boys day except that to celebrate they stamp a little carp design on the outside. Not surprisingly it is filled with red bean paste and is all about growing up […]

The 5th May in Japan is a holiday to celebrate Boy’s Festival. It is all about healthy growing boys and there are a lot of symbols ranging from beautiful flowing carp streamers (koinobori) to samurai replicas. Of course being Japan, there is traditional food as well. My favourite Boy’s day food is Kashiwamochi.
It is simply […]

Dolls day (on the third March) also involves preferential dinner treatment for little girls. My daughter scored this pink obento for her dinner. The shame was that apparently it looked better than it tasted and she ate very little of it. I guess you aren’t supposed to eat anything that looks that pink and toxic […]

Now here is another dish that I am not sure about its name. I think it is called Ozoni, but I would like confirmation of this. It is a simple dish which, in this case, included chicken, grilled omochi, carrot, green veges, and chikuwa fish sausage served in a soup stock. It tastes great, but […]

Our Osechi Ryori arrived on the 31st December as ordered and here it is. I haven’t got around to fully identifying all of the items yet, but needless to say, they are all gone now. They ranged from seafood to sweet beans and a vast array in between each of which has some symbolic significance. Just […]

This is what the plastic packages of Omochi that sit on supermarket shelves are supposed to look like.
What you see is a small timber pedestal with two round omochi cakes on top. If you look closely, you can see the outside is drying out and cracking as it loses moisture faster than the inside. Eventually […]

It seems like a long way away, but yesterday we ordered our new years food. The deal is that you should order this special food in advance and do no cooking over the few days around new year.
Osechi Ryouri (New Years Food) is a particular type of food that traditionally was durable enough to last, […]

Christmas is just around the corner and I’ve been wondering what it is like in other parts of the world. I am particularly curious about Christmas food, and so I need your help.
Here is a little competition to give you a chance to tell us all what Christmas food is like in your country. After […]

It is officially Matsuri (festival) season in Japan now. The rainy season is almost over and on the weekends, the air is booming with the fireworks that signal a matsuri.
The sights, sounds and smells of a Japanese Matsuri are just great. The familiar music, the traditional food and the timeless sight of kids having a ball, is a sort of tonic […]
