Tonkatsu obento
Here is another obento from our favourite local obento shop. This is this shops speciality, Tonkatsu. A fillet of pork crumbed and deep fried. Served with shredded cabbage, mustard and tonkatsu sauce.

This is the Japanese version of a takeaway fisherman’s basket. Fish fillets, oysters, a ridiculously long prawn, with pickles and rice. All made fresh and in the box for about 800 yen ($8). I think that is great value.
What would you call this? As you can see from the terrible photo, it is quite small - easily fitting in my hand. With a brown baked pastry crust and a filling of pork and onions. If it was steamed I would be more sure but baked? It came from my local “French” bakery and […]
I picked up this ekiben in Sendai recently. Sendai is famous for a few things, in particular beef tongue. Without knowing it ( I was in a rush and just chose the nicest box) I landed some gyu (beef) tongue. This was fine slices that had been sauteed in a mild miso sort of sauce. Really […]
My 2 year old daughter bought her classiest ekiben (railway obento) last weekend. The box is the shape of an old steam train, and strangely was made of ceramic. I wonder if they really thought about the practicality of clunking around a ceramic lunchbox on and off Shinkansens?
Anyhow the contents were great (I can say because as per […]
What do you get for 250 yen, about $2.50, today. I can buy almost 2 liters of gas, almost a starbucks coffee, or a train ticket across Tokyo. That is, unless you go tho the Obento shop at the bust corner of Asakusa right next to 2 of the entrances to the Tsukuba Express.
At this […]
My 2 year old daughter got the obento of her dreams last week. Imagine a cute little beautifully presented lunch in a hard plastic reusable Hello Kitty. She was over the moon. In the end she ate hardly any of it, but that is what being 2 is all about. But she did love the box and […]
I took a holiday that involved a shinkansen bullet train journey last week. On the platform I grabbed the nicest looking obento to eat on the way. By chance I stumbled on a self heating beef obento.
The deal is, you pull a string that is sticking out of the cardboard box and after 7 minutes […]
Tonight was a rush dinner, takeaway obento. And a nice one at that.
As you can see from the photo there is an assortment of food in there and a pile of rice.
It included potato salad and egg roll omelette. Some pickles, and a miniature dry oden selection. In the main compartment was some tempura piman […]
On Sunday I found myself cold and miserably hungry. I rolled down the street in search of something, anything that was hot and filling and before I knew it, there stood the 7-11 konbeni. Inside was everything a stomach could desire but it had to be hot so I had a choice between Oden, hot […]
