Everything that glitters is not gold. I love pudding, parfait and ice cream. What could be better than a pudding-grand parfait-ice cream? Almost anything as far as I am concerned. Next time I will look instead for a chocolate-beef-ice cream or the Kimchi-prawn- ice cream. Maybe they would taste better.

Today is the last day of Golden Week here in Japan. It is made up of a string of public holidays (this week broken up by some work days for some malicious reason). Yesterday was Boys day so I thought I would share one last bit of boy’s day for this year. This morning we opened some […]

On Boy’s Day in Japan, there are plenty of different sweets to try. As far as I can work out this is not specifically for boys day except that to celebrate they stamp a little carp design on the outside. Not surprisingly it is filled with red bean paste and is all about growing up […]

The 5th May in Japan is a holiday to celebrate Boy’s Festival. It is all about healthy growing boys and there are a lot of symbols ranging from beautiful flowing carp streamers (koinobori) to samurai replicas. Of course being Japan, there is traditional food as well. My favourite Boy’s day food is Kashiwamochi.
It is simply […]

Pino have just released a new ice cream in a rare cheese flavour. I am not sure if it is rare cheese because there aren’t many around or because it contains mascarpone. Can anyone help me. In Australia I never heard of rare cheesecakes or rare cheese. I only ever new of cheese by its […]

More specifically this is an ichigo (strawberry) cookie tart cake stick. What makes an ice cream with artificial strawberry lumps covered in a shell of white chocolate a cake stick?
It tasted great but I have a lot of trouble thinking about cake when I eat it. Worth a try, but don’t expect too much

There is nothing to do with noodles, rice or Asian cooking in this recipe but I’m sure you’ll forgive me if you try it.
This is my own version of bread and butter pudding made from memory so I’m sure it could be improved.
Take about 6 slices of bread without crusts. Butter and Jam them then […]

Miro, my Slovakian friend cooked this rice pudding for me the other day. It takes a little time, but the results were well worth it. Here is how he did it.
boil 380g of rice in 1 litre of milk stirring continually until it is soft (the boring part)
mix in two pinches of salt then let it […]

These sesame sweets came from a sweet shop in Beijing earlier this week. They would have to be one of the most delicious and chewy things i have ever tasted. Close up, they shine sort of like opal, and they taste like sweet sweet sesame. The chewiness is something to be experienced. My daughter, 2 […]

These two puddings are typical of a whole line of Japanese pre-made desserts. On the left is what they just call purin, which is similar to a creme caramel but with a different sauce. On the right is a milk flavoured one with a coffee sauce. The one on the left takes my vote, but […]
