Rice, wakame salad, sashimi, tempura, sushi, calamari salad and Japanese beer.
I’m glad to say that the dinner was better than the movie we saw. And the best news yet was that there were left overs for lunch the next day.

Most furikake is long life dried stuff that you drop on top of plain rice to make it more exciting but this is the really nice stuff. It is made up of all sorts of weird ingredients like dries and shaved calamari, seaweed, spices and all sorts of other unidentifiable things. The bad news is […]

Summer is here and what better way to while away a quiet break with a cold drink?
Young soy beans, gently steamed and salted are the ultimate snack food. Healthy, delicious and appetizing.

I had given up on new Japanese beers recently. There are such a never ending stream of new models that mostly look OK, smell OK, but taste like something very unnatural. Most of them are second grade (in a legal sense) beers and the terrible taste is all to do with the factories cunningly trying […]

So my wife is back from her travels and I got to thinking what is one dish that I would find really hard to be bothered cooking from scratch for just one person?

Anyhow tonight I could think of nothing easier to cook by myself, for myself than a plate […]

Chopped onions, mushrooms, cabbage and beef all went into the fry pan until almost done. Then in went the noodles closely followed by the […]

Linking into yesterday’s meal, I have once again used (or misused) somen noodles. This time they are hot and mixed in with the stir fried dish at the last minute which I think is something that fine somen noodles would not be used to. Anyhow it was a simple matter of stir frying some thinly sliced […]

Yesterday I ate sake ( not the sort you drink but the Japanese word for salmon) as a rice bowl donburi meal. The rice was the second half of a batch that I cooked for the night before and the curry that I ate then. Maybe the way to cook quickly and with minimum fuss […]

Cooking for one is all about timing. Tonight I only just got dinner together before I passed out with hunger. That is my excuse anyway for not taking a photo until half of the meal was already eaten.
Tonight I re-heated the second half of last night’s rice and topped it with steamed spinach, sauteed long […]
