Lemon Rasam

You cannot be Filipino and not love sinigang. For that reason alone, rasam would be tops on a Filipino’s list of favorite Indian foods. Rasam is what I make in the cold season, when I don’t have fish or meat in the freezer and yet I’m longing for something hot and sour, to […]

Lentil and Vegetable Soup

This is really more a soup for winter, but being Asian we love hot soups any time of year. The original recipe calls for masoor dhal, but since all I had on hand was a large bag of organic green lentils, I used those. No one complained. I also doubled most of […]

Spicy Sweet Potatoes

If you like your sweet potatoes sweet (as my dear hubby and my little one do), this probably won’t appeal to you. However, if you’re like me, looking for a change from the usual, you’re sure to like this one!
3 cups cubed sweet potatoes
3 tablespoons canola oil

Chana Dal Payasam

The recipe comes from Mahanandi, though mine didn’t turn out quite as pretty. I used pistachios instead of cashews, and my sago is the mini one. We served this on Good Friday.

Making Paneer

One of the things on my “must-do-sometime” list is making paneer. Especially after finding out what Afghanis have for breakfast, I can’t wait to try. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon Anthony’s post on how to make it — sounds really easy, don’t you think! I just need to find […]

Party Food: Samosas from Jehangir Mehta

Just finished making samosas from this recipe at Food and Wine, but I made a few twists and turns while I’m at it. It’s for a party we’re hosting on the 23rd, and samosas are one of my party staples because you can fix it and forget it, then reheat in the oven — […]

Ramadan Recipes

The holy Islamic month of Ramadan/Ramadhan/Ramzaan began September 23. This month-long fast requires believers to abstain from eating, drinking and other sensory pleasures from sun-up to sundown. Water is not allowed, and my Pakistani friend Azra says neither is swallowing your own saliva! They rise in the morning before dawn to eat […]

Victoria Street Market, Durban, South Africa

If you ever find yourself in Durban, the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal (and third largest in the country), you are in for a treat. Over 170 stalls, including Indian, Chinese and Taiwanese food, can be found at “the Vic”, or Victoria Street Market, located in a building that looks like a Maharajah’s palace, complete […]

Guessing Game Answer Revealed

Two weeks ago, we played a little guessing game.

Here they are in all their roasted and nutty glory. My kids love this as a snack. Because it’s good for them, I let them have all they want. The only thing is even after handfuls of this stuff, they’re still asking for more. […]
