I found this little gem at a local grocery store last week. Chinese honey, herbal jelly. I expected it to be a desert, but it was actually a drink. Brown liquid that tasted like brown sugar and clumps of jelly that were impossible to get out of the can.
I am guessing that it is supposed […]

Congari Milk Shake is a drink that I chose from a vending machine and I wish I never did. It is a sort of egg flip style of atrocity that if it wasn’t so washed out, would be totally disgusting. This is a warning. Stay clear.

This a particular type of sake that comes into popularity around new years time. It is white and cloudy and I understand that this is because it hasn’t been filtered and refined.
It is usually drunk warm (a minute in the microwave does the trick) and it is bordering on sickly sweet. It reminds me of […]

Here is another Shochu variety that I sampled last weekend. Black Sugar Shochu.
From what I can work out this bottle came from Okinawa, where black sugar is a very popular ingredient in a lot of food. They grow and refine sugar down there and have done so for many years and so black sugar sweets, […]

Imo Shochu is Japanese sweet potato spirits. Clear and bright with a very delicate aroma. It is nice straight or with ice but it wasn’t until last weekend that I truly fell in love with it. I was introduced to Shochu and hot water and it has opened my eyes.
Mixing almost equal parts of Shochu and […]

Gladly there was a Yamazaki vending machine nearby and I cleverly selected the perfect solution. Canned corn soup.
It is stinking hot […]

I have been given this bottle of plonk from China with the description that it is Chinese Sake. It doesn’t taste or smell like sake as I know it. It’s alcohol content is 38% and it is as clear as can be. It came in a beautiful box of startling red and gold and it […]

Beer season is drawing to a close in Japan (if that is possible). My favourite little beer shop has put away their Nama Beer tap until next summer. I guess that is all to do with demand. Anyway the cold weather is here and it definitely feels more enticing to drink room temperature or hot […]

My quest for summer refreshment has taken me in some interesting directions but none so bizarre as the new flavour of Kirin Nuda.
I first saw it advertised on a poster in a train and decided that I had to give it a try. Who could resist a drink called Kirin Nuda - Grapefruit and Hop […]

Last weekend I conducted a little experiment. It is hot in Japan at the moment. Hot and humid and I was in my back yard cooking German sausages, chicken, pineapple and corn over a searingly hot BBQ. I needed refreshment.
I decided that I would put three popular thirst quenchers to the test to see which […]
