101% sesame

This is a sesame sweet thing that I expected would be filled with something.  As you can see I was wrong.  It is all 100% delicious sesame seeds glued together with sweet goo.  It came from a Beijing sweet store as did just about everything else I have written about this week.  Guess whose wife […]

Mystery sweet #3

I have no idea about these ones.  I can tell you that they look like kind of wafers or crackers and the picture made me think of milk or caramel.  I can’t read the package but maybe someone can read it for me?

Mystery sweets #2

The second mystery Chinese sweet is apparently made from sweet plum.  Why are they plum coloured and cream coloured? Does anyone know?  When I saw the picture of the plums I immediately thought of Umeboshi, but that is not exactly sweet!

Mystery sweets number 1

Over the next 3 days I am going to put up 3 separate Chinese sweets that I know very little about.  The only reason they are here is that these things fascinate me.  Has anyone tried these.  It looks like they are made from, or to look like, a kind of melon, like a short […]

Fish and almonds

There are no shortage of Japanese snacks available.  These guys simply said dried little fish and almonds on the package.  It turns out that they are sweetened which sounds disgusting but is actually really nice.  Before dinner or in front of a movie they would be great. Just don’t think too deeply about what you […]

Macha Cheese cake Toppo

I don’t know why they make this, but I also don’t know why I bought it.  I guess the manufacturers saw me coming.  Really the flavour is not too bad.  If you think about a pretzel filled with artificial cheese cake that tastes like macha tea then they could have done a lot worse.  I […]

Dried Squid

dried squid is a traditional drinking snack in Japan.  The seemingly inedible shredded version comes back to life as soon as you start to chew whereas the whole one requires a little more effort to make it go down.  It is great relaxing food and a little goes a long way.  The perfect way to wait […]

Rose Menthol Chewing gum

If you have ever had the urge to try rose and menthol flavoured sugarless chewing gum, then you are in luck.  This stuff immediately smells like roses (or at least artificial roses) and it even tastes a little rosey (whatever that tastes like).  After a minute the flavour was all gone, so I put in […]

Chocolate covered fries

In their wisdom, Meiji have created a new way to sell chocolate.  They figure if they get a small clump of fried potato chips and dip them in chocolate, then they will end up with a desirable snack.  I disagree.  Potato and chocolate flavours do not mix.  I hope Meiji works this out soon. I […]

Choco Bari

A Choco Bari is a new Japanese ice cream that is surprisingly like what I would call an Australian Golden Gaytime (don’t ask about the name).  Vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and crunchy things stuck all over.  The only disappointing thing about it is the name.  In Australia the name Barry has been twisted […]
