This stuff is proudly called The Caramel Corn. As far as I can see it doesn’t taste like caramel or corm. It actually tastes like polystyrene packing foam chips dipped in dried maple syrup. Is it strange for caramel to taste like maple syrup. Maybe it is just me but I think caramel should taste […]

Imo (Japanese sweet potato) is great. Why you would need to imitate it is a decent question but here it is. These guys are kind of pastry shells filled with a sweet cake kind of thing. On top is a thin layer of custard. It is delicious, it contains zero sweet potato and it doesn’t […]

I can’t help but think of coconut ice when I see this stuff. It is sticky but still rigid. Not too sweet but definitely not savoury. I imagine that it is made of rice, kind of like omochi or dango. Apart from that I don’t know. Does anyone have a name for this mystery?

These guys have nothing to do with noodles, rice or Asian cooking but I don’t care. They are Slovakian Easter biscuits, and they are very cool. The biscuits are full of spices and the icing is apparently done by old Slovakian grandmothers (it must take a lot of patience and time). Unfortunately, the details don’t show […]

This is a sesame sweet thing that I expected would be filled with something. As you can see I was wrong. It is all 100% delicious sesame seeds glued together with sweet goo. It came from a Beijing sweet store as did just about everything else I have written about this week. Guess whose wife […]

I have no idea about these ones. I can tell you that they look like kind of wafers or crackers and the picture made me think of milk or caramel. I can’t read the package but maybe someone can read it for me?

The second mystery Chinese sweet is apparently made from sweet plum. Why are they plum coloured and cream coloured? Does anyone know? When I saw the picture of the plums I immediately thought of Umeboshi, but that is not exactly sweet!

Over the next 3 days I am going to put up 3 separate Chinese sweets that I know very little about. The only reason they are here is that these things fascinate me. Has anyone tried these. It looks like they are made from, or to look like, a kind of melon, like a short […]

There are no shortage of Japanese snacks available. These guys simply said dried little fish and almonds on the package. It turns out that they are sweetened which sounds disgusting but is actually really nice. Before dinner or in front of a movie they would be great. Just don’t think too deeply about what you […]

I don’t know why they make this, but I also don’t know why I bought it. I guess the manufacturers saw me coming. Really the flavour is not too bad. If you think about a pretzel filled with artificial cheese cake that tastes like macha tea then they could have done a lot worse. I […]
