Canned red bean soup

As Autumn turns into winter in Japan, the drink vending machines gradually change from cold to hot.  Hot tea, hot coffee, hot lemon drinks and hot red bean soup.

Not many machines sell the red bean (an) soup but when they do I always go for it.  It is sweet, lumpy and very warming.  Nothing goes down so well and so fast on a cold day.

Red bean soup is made by boiling adzuki beans, water and sugar until they sort of puree together.  This can take some time and effort, but there is no such drawback when all you have to do is stick 120yen into a machine and then hook into it.

The cans make great hand warmers, the smell is sweet and appetizing and as I’ve said, the taste is heavenly.  What more could you ask for except for bigger cans.  There is quite an art to getting the last few beans out of the bottom of the can, but I’m not going to give away all of my secrets here.  You’ll just have to try out canned red bean soup for yourself and see how you go.
