Noodles and Rice

Busy-busy-busy

by Stef on August 28th, 2006

I know I haven’t blogged many recipes lately. School just restarted again over here (homeschooling, that is) but I’m still putting together plans for the year — ack! So the past few weeks our meals have been mostly reworked Filipino recipes; I say “reworked” because they don’t follow traditional patterns. For instance this evening, we had apritada/afritada, but I used the green peppers from our CSA subscription, along with a large Yukon Gold potato *and* a sweet potato instead of the more common red potatoes. Over the weekend, I cooked ginataang gulay (vegetables with coconut milk) that came out more like a cross between Bicol Express and pinakbet. No tomatoes in mine, but I did have 3 long hot (!!!) chilies, from Gravel Knolls. I also used the green peppers mentioned above, organic kabocha squash from Jungle Jim’s, and green beans from Kroger (instead of my preferred yard-long-beans). Additional flavoring from lemongrass, which I’m currently trying to grow in my kitchen. One day last week it was bistek, except made with pork steaks, sliced thinly, instead of beef — much like what Celia of English Patis has done in her post. One lunch dish was simply fried tofu cubes dipped in chojang sauce (scroll down when you get to the link) made even spicier mixed with kochujang. The chojang sauce is a homemade one that I keep in the jar in the refrigerator, ready to flavor stir-fries, or use as a dip, or to add to soups, etc. No, not Pinoy, but it does remind me of tokwa’t baboy — except without the pork:D. And my brother is also in town so sometimes he takes over kitchen duty. This week he cooked sesame chicken wings. There’s a recipe here, and my brother’s is a bit different (he uses Chinkiang vinegar and Shiaoh Xing in his, but yummy all the same. Maybe one of these days I’ll persuade him to write it all down for me. Finger-lickin’ good is not enough to describe it.

Besides all that I’ve been enjoying the awesome harvest at Gravel Knolls, which we pick up every Tuesday. Nothing is better than corn fresh-picked that day and boiled for all of 4 minutes. Ooooh, and the tomatoes!!! Thursday evening I fried some green tomatoes and sprinkled them with a bit of soy sauce after… ah, heaven! I tell you, if I didn’t have meat- and seafood-lovers in the house I’d happily go vegan/vegetarian all summer long.

I promise to post some recipes soon..
