Bread size

Is it just Japan that does this?  Commercial bread - predominantly white and cake like - is sold in what I would call half loaf sizes.  Each loaf is the same size but you buy either 8,6, 5 or 4 slice versions.  The maths isn’t remarkable but you can imagine that a loaf cut into […]

Quick Chicken

Just another 5 minute stir fry explosion today.  Chicken breast cut across the grain into strips.  Green vegetables, mushrooms, sake and mirin.  All fried together until the chicken is cooked.  Served on rice with Shichimi 7 spices.

Pork Bun?

What would you call this? As you can see from the terrible photo, it is quite small - easily fitting in my hand.  With a brown baked pastry crust and a filling of pork and onions.  If it was steamed I would be more sure but baked?  It came from my local “French” bakery and […]

Choco Bari

A Choco Bari is a new Japanese ice cream that is surprisingly like what I would call an Australian Golden Gaytime (don’t ask about the name).  Vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and crunchy things stuck all over.  The only disappointing thing about it is the name.  In Australia the name Barry has been twisted […]

Olesniky

Once again, my photography doesn’t do the subject justice.  What you see here is a Genuine Slovakian Olesniky.  Cooked with genuine Slovakian techniques by a genuine Slovakian friend in my little Japanese kitchen
Here is the basic concept, but be warned there is a lot of adjustment to taste going on throughout the procedure.
A few potatoes
half […]

Vanilla Pocky

Cultural integrity took the day off when Pocky turned Tahitian Vanilla.  The concept is more bizarre than the taste.  It actually tastes little more than white chocolate pocky, but I guess they needed some new marketing angle.  Already there are several trillion different types of Pocky and pockyish products.  I guess they had to scratch […]

Quick Oden

Oden can take some time to prepare at home if you do it with integrity.  If you don’t mind cheating, there is a five minute solution.  A kit from the supermarket fridge includes all of the essentials, the soup (concentrated) and quick instructions.  Just add the soup and the required water to a pan.  Drop […]

Banana Chocolate

I promise that I am getting to the end of my chocolate reviews soon.  Although I am scarcely keeping up with new Japanese Chocolate releases.  It seems like Japan is as chocolate mad as I am this season.
Any way, this one gets the thumbs down.  Putting a sliver of yellow banana flavoured plastic in the […]

Ice cream puffs

Anything to do with Ice cream is OK by me.  Cream puffs filled with creamy frozen ice cream is a superb idea.  Of course the pastry was a bit second rate, but the flavour and concept was 100%

Orange chocolate with rice cereal

I found, purchased and ate this chocolate for the first time this week.  I was a little hesitant because of the way it was named.  Fortunately I found out that you can’t judge a chocolate by its cover.  It was mainly thick creamy chocolate with rice bubbles scattered through it.  Where the orange flavour came […]
