Tell me if I am behind the times here, but I think this is pretty cool. It is a silicon cooking brush that my wife brought home from Tokyo last week. Instead of having difficult to clean cotton or meltable nylon bristles, this one is guaranteed to survive a serious stir frying without even flinching. […]

Glica have a nice ice cream that they call caramel. It is actually a lot more like maple syrup flavour in my mind, and I have noticed that many caramel flavoured things in Japan actually taste like this. Is this just Japan, or does caramel taste like maple syrup in other countries as well?

dried squid is a traditional drinking snack in Japan. The seemingly inedible shredded version comes back to life as soon as you start to chew whereas the whole one requires a little more effort to make it go down. It is great relaxing food and a little goes a long way. The perfect way to wait […]

Sukiyaki is one of those “as you like it” sort of meals. This night we happened to have some New Zealand lamb (which is hidden beneath everything in the bottom of the Nabe. Also there is tofu, Konyaku noodles, Chrysanthemum leaves, long onion and mushrooms. As you can see, the tide went out and it […]

This stuff immediately smells like roses (or at least artificial roses) and it even tastes a little rosey (whatever that tastes like). After a minute the flavour was all gone, so I put in […]

This is the Japanese version of a takeaway fisherman’s basket. Fish fillets, oysters, a ridiculously long prawn, with pickles and rice. All made fresh and in the box for about 800 yen ($8). I think that is great value.

Tai is a kind of red sea brim. Combine it with grated ginger and some lemon juice and a BBQ’d fish feast happens. The only thing to watch out for is to wash the insides very well to remove any bitter flavour. Otherwise perhaps 10 minutes on either side is all that it takes. And […]

In their wisdom, Meiji have created a new way to sell chocolate. They figure if they get a small clump of fried potato chips and dip them in chocolate, then they will end up with a desirable snack. I disagree. Potato and chocolate flavours do not mix. I hope Meiji works this out soon. I […]
