Beef tongue obento

I picked up this ekiben in Sendai recently.  Sendai is famous for a few things, in particular beef tongue.  Without knowing it ( I was in a rush and just chose the nicest box) I landed some gyu (beef) tongue.  This was fine slices that had been sauteed in a mild miso sort of sauce.  Really […]

Beef Udon soup

After the Tokyo Marathon I made my way to Shimbashi station and found myself totally depleted.  After I finished I ate a banana, a bread roll, the most beautiful ume onigiri, a soy joy bar, and a sports drink, but that didn’t come close to solving my problems.  I was cold and empty with absolutely […]

Tokyo Marathon Tabehoudai

Tabehoudai is a Japanese word for All-you-can-eat, or buffet or smorgasbord.  It is a very popular way to eat as you can pick and choose a little (or a lot) of everything and try a whole heap of different dishes.
Last weekend was the Tokyo Marathon, held throughout closed streets in some of the most congested parts of […]

Chicken, mushrooms and Udon

Try this, over the weekend.
A breast of chicken cut into strips
A handful of mushrooms, I used Japanese winter mushrooms but any sort should do
A small handful of chopped onion ( I used naga negi but who cares)
A bunch of green veges
A couple of packets of udon noodles (the wider the better)
A drop of oil
A splash […]

The eating statistics

A rare but important statistic that measures the quality of food is chopstick breakage.  As far as I can tell, whenever a chopstick gets broken during a meal, it is because the meal is so good and engrossing that the eater loses control and chomps too early or late.  I am sure there are other […]

Honey herbal jelly

I found this little gem at a local grocery store last week.  Chinese honey, herbal jelly.  I expected it to be a desert, but it was actually a drink.  Brown liquid that tasted like brown sugar and clumps of jelly that were impossible to get out of the can.
I am guessing that it is supposed […]

Steam Train ekiben

My 2 year old daughter bought her classiest ekiben (railway obento) last weekend.  The box is the shape of an old steam train, and strangely was made of ceramic.  I wonder if they really thought about the practicality of clunking around a ceramic lunchbox on and off Shinkansens?
Anyhow the contents were great (I can say because as per […]

Nata de coco

Japan sells this weird product that I imagine is also sold in other countries. called nato de coco.  It is sort of like a tough coconut jelly that is sold in a light syrup.  It goes well with fruit or other deserts like yogurt or pudding.  The only question is how is it made?  I heard […]

Fresh chocolate dai fuku

I’ve written about dai fuku icecreams before but they are usually a ball of vanilla icecream surrounded by a thin shell of chewy omochi.
These ones are their bad brothers.  Vanilla icecream, with a big blob of sticky chocolate stuff inside, covered with omochi and dusted with cocoa powder.
Why they are called fresh chocolate I am […]
