Osechi Ryouri

It seems like a long way away, but yesterday we ordered our new years food.  The deal is that you should order this special food in advance and do no cooking over the few days around new year.
Osechi Ryouri (New Years Food) is a particular type of food that traditionally was durable enough to last, […]

What is this thing?

Last week my wife proudly bought this home from the shop as a challenge for me.  I have no idea what it is called or anything about it so I am turning the challenge over to you.
As you can see from the picture it is green and leafy and big.  The leaves are similar to […]

Shredded Nori

There are plenty of ways to eat nori but my favourite would have to be shredded.  In big sheets it makes great sushi.  In small sheets it is good wrapped around onigiri or even just a mouth full of rice.  But shredded finely it is soooo versatile.  Our photo today shoes a generous pile on […]

Deep fried Renkon

This is the real Heaven on a Stick.
Thick sliced of fresh Renkon (Lotus root).  Washed and white.  About half an inch thick.  Crumbed lightly and then deep fried relatively slowly on a butterfly skewer.  Eaten straight from the kitchen and dipped in Ponzu sauce, they have to be my favourite thing in the world at the moment.  […]

The mystery is revealed

Pamela M has given us a very apt description of these Japanese curry blocks.  The photo above shows the block (actually 1 of 2) that come in the green box.  In this case green is middle of the range for curry heat, but even the hottest isn’t that hot.  Take a look at Pamela’s comments […]

Tuna Cheek and Cheese

Last week I discovered a dish that I unwillingly loved.  Tuna Cheek and Cheese.  I say unwillingly, because I am not one of the “Cheese makes everything better” crowd and I found it hard to believe that a lump of cheese with tuna cheek wrapped around it, bread-crumbed and fried could be anything but disappointing.  […]

Kushi Tombo

Coming in on the back of a run of terrible photos is this unidentifiable shot of my new favourite restaurant, Kushi Tombo.  I can take most of the blame for the terrible photography but some of the credit goes to the extreme overhead lighting, dark restaurant and pitch black evening.  Photography and me are like […]

Shungiku Chrysanthemum leaves

Coming from Australia I always thought that Chrysanthemums were just flowers that became popular each year around Mother’s Day.  How wrong was I.
Chrysanthemum leaves have become a regular member of my shopping basket thanks to their relationship with Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki.  Both of these recipes can benefit from the strangely familiar and delicious flavour […]

We have our first Wasabi Winner

The winner of last week’s Wasabi for Winners competition has been decided. All of the entries were put through a rigorous judging process ( me reading and re-reading the comments over and over trying to pick a favourite) and it ended with a very difficult decision.
For this first competition, Kate has walked away with the wonderful wasabi […]
