Indulge me a bit here. I’ve had a migraine for the last couple of hours and I’m loathe to drink any pill. I’ve been trolling the Internet for “magic cures” — okay, not really, but some tea, or some natural medication… so far I’ve found turmeric. But I really don’t feel like […]

I know, it’s the last day of August. There’s still 116 days ’til Christmas according to Organized Christmas. This year, I promised myself, we would be more organized, and therefore, hopefully, more relaxed. Relaxed enough to celebrate the season — and the Reason — the way it’s meant to be. While […]

Aren’t these the cutest? I couldn’t resist. They’re the perfect little treats for not-so-perfect little girls who love hopia. Found them locally, imported from Eng Bee Tin Philippines.
I promised my 5-yo we’ll make this soon. Mooncake season is practically here — time to get out that recipe!
Mooncake molds available at the […]

Last weekend was the annual Tsukuba Matsuri (festival). This is not to be confused with the Tsukuba Matsuri that I mistakenly thought was on last month, and looked like being a very lonely, one man sort of festival until someone pointed out my mistake. This was the real thing.
Although the photo above, doesn’t really show […]

This was a recipe adapted from Susanna Foo’s cookbook.
It’s quite surprising, the use of thyme and tomato — ingredients you don’t usually see in Chinese cuisine. However, curiosity got the better of me and I tried it anyway. While this is a dish that’s easy enough to tackle on a hot […]

My crisper had nothing that evening but some lettuce, avocadoes and green onions. So I thought — perfect! We’ll have a green salad! Doesn’t make for a very good picture here as you can see, but it did make for some good eating.
1/4 cup miso of your choice
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 […]

There are probably as many recipes for miso soup as there are cooks in Japan, but yesterday I found a new favourite. I was having lunch at Yamamoto Sushi in Tsukuba and as a part of a lunch time promotion they brought around big bowls of Kame (crab) and Miso soup. It tasted like the […]
